Saturday, June 27th  -- 8:00PM

MOTHER'S BOYS
(Rick Cunha, Peter Feldmann, David Jackson)

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY GRANGE HALL
2374 Alamo Pintado Avenue, Los Olivos CA

Three veterans of the 1960s country-folk boom, Peter Feldmann (mandolin/guitar), Rick Cunha (guitar/slide guitar), and David Jackson (bass) will bring their vocal and instrumental dynamics to the SY Valley Grange Hall #644 on Saturday night.

"All of us fell in love with the music of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, The Delmore Brothers, and other country music greats years ago, and we still love performing those fine "old familiar tunes", as they used to be called" says Peter. "All together, we've probably got north of 120 years of experience on club and concert stages.

Mother's Boys features tight harmonies, hot pickin', country humor "with the hair on it", and lots of plain musical fun. The group includes:

Peter Feldmann: A singer and multi- instrumentalist with many years' performing experience throughout California and the West, Peter Feldmann has been presenting bluegrass, folk, string band, and related musics since the early 1960's, and is known as the founder of the Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddler's Convention, and the original Bluebird Café in Santa Barbara, a music club highly influential on the Southern California Music scene.

Rick Cunha may truly be described as a guitar players' guitar player. He is also one of America's finest songwriters. Rick has performed in concert with Mason Williams (for whom he also produces), Emmy Lou Harris, John Stewart, Anne Murray, Jennifer Warnes, Buck Owens, and The Smothers Brothers, to name a few. His songs have been recorded by Ms. Warnes, Ian Matthews, The Smothers Brothers, Michael Johnson and many other artists. Mr. Cunha's solo recording career began in 1974 with an album for the GRC label, that included his song "Yo-Yo-Man" which has since been immortalized on television and in concert by Tom Smothers. Other solo albums include: "Cunha Tunes" and "Moving Pictures".

David Jackson: Being in the right place at the right time and lucky, David Jackson's career began with 3 years on The Andy Williams show as a comedian and bassist and little has changed in the intervening years, if hair loss doesn't count. Writing "Joy To The World" (with Hoyt Axton for 3 Dog Night) and "The No, No Song" (Again, with Hoyt, for Ringo Starr) and playing with Jackson Brown, Glenn Campbell, Roger Miller and John Denver still left time to sandwich in a wide variety of musics over the years. Still, there is so much more playing to do.

Tickets: $12.00, available in advance at The Book Loft, Solvang, on-line [ CLICK HERE ], and at the door (begining at 7:30 PM) as space permits.

The Songs Of Charlie Poole

Banjoist and singer Charlie Poole enjoyed a brief but brilliant career as a musician and singer during what has been called the "Golden Age of String Band Music", the mid 1920s until the onset of the Great Depression.  He was known for his stellar banjo picking, his ear for a good song or tune, and his drinking, which led to an early death, aged 39, in 1931.  My friend Jerry Dallal has compiled a great website-based collection of the lyrics to Charlie's songs.  This was no mean feat, as Charlies enunciation on his recordings was sometimes even purposefully dreadful.

Check out his great songs here:

BILL MONROE FIDDLE TUNES

Here's news of a really fascinating project by my friend Stacy Phillips:

Peter,

I am in the midst of a project to collect all of Bill Monroe's fiddle tunes. Specifically I am trying to find live cuts of the many fiddle-featured instrumentals he wrote but never recorded.  Over the years he occasionally performed these with his band at shows.  Others he "gave" to musicians in the hopes that they would make his tune their own.

There were many years that Decca did not want to record instrumentals, but Monroe kept writing them. Unfortunately, some of these pieces may have already been lost as old tapes wear with age.

There are no current plans (or reasonable hopes) to publish this material.  First comes finding, saving and transcribing the tunes.  If nothing else, they will eventually be donated to an organization that is dedicated to this sort of cataloging.
If you know of any live Bluegrass Boys shows with performances of unrecorded fiddle tunes or recordings of any "mystery" Monroe fiddle tunes by other bands, please contact me.

Thanks and please pass the word.
